Discover the Journey of Sundar Singh
On 3rd September 1889, Sundar Singh was born into a Sikh family in Rampur, near Doraha in Ludhiana district, Punjab, northern India. His mother, a devout woman, took him to learn from a Hindu Sadhu while also ensuring he received an English education at Ewing Christian High School, Ludhiana. However, his mother’s death when he was fourteen deeply affected him, leading him to burn a Bible in anger. Despite being raised in the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, Sundar Singh struggled with spiritual restlessness.

In his despair, he decided to end his life unless he encountered the true God. That very night, he had a vision of Jesus Christ, which transformed his life forever. Declaring his desire to follow Christ, he faced rejection from his father, Sher Singh, and even an attempted poisoning by his brother, Rajender Singh. He endured multiple assassination attempts and extreme opposition, yet found solace and support through British Christian missionaries. On his sixteenth birthday, Sundar Singh was publicly baptized at the parish church in Shimla. Before this, he had been residing at a Christian Missionary Home in Sabathu, near Shimla, where he served leprosy patients.
In October 1906, he embarked on his lifelong mission as a Sadhu within Christianity, choosing to wear the saffron robe to connect with his fellow Indians in a culturally familiar way. His deep conviction led him to travel across Punjab, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Balochistan , and the North-West Frontier, where he endured persecution but remained unwavering in his faith. His remarkable journey earned him the title "The Apostle with the Bleeding Feet."
"I am not worthy to follow in the steps of my Lord," he said. "But, like Him, I want no home, no possessions. Like Him, I will belong to the road, sharing the suffering of my people, eating with those who will give me shelter, and telling all men of the love of God."
